@Fiendin The "instrument" frequently associated with a monkey is a barrel organ (there are quite a few vids on Youtube). In 19th century NYC these "organ grinders" were often considered pests, something like mimes today :^)

That is a hurdy gurdy. That thing with the hand crank you see in movies where the guy with the monkey on the streets is trying to make money is sometimes called a hurdy gurdy. But it's no more a hurdy gurdy than a jack-in-the-box. It simply plays a tune automatically as you turn the crank. The true hurdy gurdy, like this one, obviously takes some skill in tuning and in playing. And no, I didn't know what it was either, but just had to find out after seeing the video too, hehe.
