In January, NJ Governor Chris Christie announced the recommendations of his Task Force on Higher Education and issued an Executive Order creating a UMDNJ Advisory Committee charged with evaluating the present system of delivering medical education throughout New Jersey and making recommendations for improvements. Its work includes a close examination of UMDNJ's present structure. The Committee is scheduled to deliver its findings to the Governor by September 1, 2011. The Committee members are:
• Committee Chair Sol J. Barer, PhD, executive chairman of Celgene;
• Robert E. Campbell, retired vice chairman of Johnson & Johnson (J&J), who served on the Higher Education Task Force headed by former Governor Tom Kean and who also chairs the Advisory Council of the UMDNJ-Cancer Institute of New Jersey;
• Joyce Wilson Harley, Esq., Essex County Administrator;
• Anthony J. Perno III, Esq., president and CEO of Cooper's Ferry Development Association, Inc.; and
• Harold T. Shapiro, PhD, former president of Princeton University and former UMDNJ Trustee.
Approximately 80 people attended a July 25, 2011 public hearing with Committee Members Joyce Harley, Sol Barer, and Robert Campbell. The Committee members noted that no decisions or recommendations have been made to date and that there will be further opportunities for public input from residents across the state.
