If I'm not mistaken though, the ECU should still be capable of pulling back the fuel trim a little if it's not making peak boost though, no? Not saying it's this guy's fault, but I never understood why the ECU continues to dump fuel into the engine knowing full-well it wont all ignite.

It smokes cause the turbo or turbos haven't fully spooled yet. In the industry, it's known as turbo lag.

i also have an 01 what type of tranny work does that take for that kind of power?

it's a NV5600 manual. Only thing needed is a good clutch to hold the power. Stock 241DHD transfer case couldn't take it sled pullin though... LOL
