Performance comparison between the HTC Magician & the HTC TyTn II (Kaiser), showing the poor performance of the TyTn II against the far older device. Both devices used are the T-Mobile branded versions and their casings may differ from the HTC branded models, but internally they are identical.

It should also be noted that both devices are running TomTom in DEMO mode, and that the minimum of applications are running on each device. This is to reduce the CPU overhead with background tasks and GPS polling and allow the maximum possible performance on each device.

Both devices are running with the stock ROM's originally supplied with them.

  • this isn't a tytn2 look at the dpad

    it looks like a tytn(not the tytn2)

    and the migician screen sucks

  • As I've said before, and CLEARLY STATE in the video, it's a T-Mobile branded version of the HTC TyTn 2, known as the Vario III. Try learning to read.

  • I know my Kaiser (tytn II, tilt, whatever) runs GREAT the first few days after a flash. If yours is slow two things to do to make it snappy are DISABLE THE PUSH EMAIL and also DISABLE THREADED TEXT MESSAGING as it is bugged. (Threaded text messaging is the new addition to WM 6.1 that shows texts like a chat window)

  • You're REALLY missing the point here. The point is that BOTH devices are using stock ROMS, the ones they were shipped with. One shouldn't have to flash a hacked ROM, and screw with settings, to get decent performance.

Since this video was made, community made drivers and ROMS are out which pretty much fix the problem, but bugger all from HTC still.

  • ok seriously. wats the problem? its the same crap for me. ones just smoother but basically they run the same speed so wats the big deal.

  • The DON'T run the same speed. To keep up, the TyTn II is forced to drop a LOT of frames, and this carries on through every single application.

  • The issue is not the OS Dapozt, in fact WM6 should make things a bit smoother if anything. The issue is that HTC has failed to release drivers for the ATI graphics board, ergo why the Kaiser, which is supposed to be far more powerful than a phone 2 years older, is running crap.

  • It's totally fair. The point is that a new phone, priced over $700, is running more jerkily than a 2-3 year old phone. And this is the flagship of the line.

BTW, to those who think it's about the speed of the TomTom demo, it isn't. It's about the jerky video rendering that takes place when the fake "car" is turning a corner. That's just an example of poor video rendering, consistent with ALL Kaiser II apps, 2d and 3d. My phone needs 5 seconds to rotate the screen when I slide out my keyboard!

  • @redfox2k8 If I can ask you, I too have noticed several performance issues with the tytn 2, here in the states known as the HTC 8925 tilt. I noticed text messaging keyboard response was super slow. How do I fix this. Also, what other optimizations would you recommend?

  • the one on the left looks a little bit faster to the one on the right.

  • what rom was is that your using?

  • have you tryed on kaiser a rom with the D3D driver included ?

I've just tryed the difference between normal driver (101 mb of memory) and the d3d one ( 85 mb) and with the second one Igo is fluid almost like the magician!! ;)

  • I agree. this is definatly not a tytn 2. but i dont think its a tytn.

  • I have a Tytn II with original WM 6.1 ROM and have never had any video problems. I benchmarked the Matrix Reloaded clip.

    TCPMP (Zoom 100%)

    ======================

    RL_MQB (320x240):164.96%

    RL_XQ (640x480): 84:40%

With Coreplayer the results are 189.69% and 87.05%. These results are dramatically better than old figures reported for TytnII at Smape (97.62% and 23.38%). Hence, the video driver has been much improved. But for 3D gaiming you need still install HTC class action drivers.

  • i have a htc magician for over 2 years and i can't complain about it. it's one of the fastest pdas and with wm6.1 upgrade it's even faster. tytn is better only because it has built in keyboard and wifi. But as a matter of speed and stability the magician rules

  • I've read they have the windows mobile 6.1 update. Does it improve the speed?

  • well it isnt as responsive as Iphone, but its becaue it has tons of options and possibilities:)
