Great Post! The Funk Brothers more often than not nailed a recording even though the arrangement might be different for the same song. I can see why in the board meeting they picked Jimmy Ruffin's version (If indeed these were up for consideration at the same time), but if Jimmy's version didn't exist this is quite good. Jimmy had a spoken word intro as well that did not make it to release. I wish I could hear everyone's take on the same backing track, much like they do on reggae tracks today.
Ok, I have been all over youtube listening to everyones version of this song and noone has a remake as soulful and beutiful and haunting as the original by Jimmy Ruffin! Gotta admite, Boy George nails it pretty good. This song, much like Sam Cookes Change Gonna Come, has to remade with a different orchestration in order to be a unique different version. Other than that, they sound like they are messing up the classic by trying to sound like Jimmy but not sound like Jimmy and Sam.

Not only is it James Jamerson, but I believe it's all of the Funk Brothers playing this track. The greatest band of all time.
