Cree Land Mini Mart opens

On January 5, 2009, the Cree Land Mini Mart had its official opening. As some welcomed the first business on Regina's first urban reserve, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation protested the $329 million in provincial tobacco and fuel tax rebates given to on-reserve businesses in Saskatchewan over the previous eight years. The CTF notes that the 15 cents per litre fuel tax (plus the federal 10 cent per litre tax and 5 percent GST) and the 18.6 cent per cigarette provincial tax don't apply to Status Indian customers, meaning an unlevel playing field.
