Cleaning abalone shells

This DIY project is how I clean and paint some of my old abalone shells.
These shells are not for sale. It is illegal to buy or sell wildlife so don't even ask.

So what do you do with them? I do inlay work, and I cut, file, level, and polish these by hand. I have to buy these after they are made into "ashtrays"... So how do I obtain these legally without paying for an "ashtray"? I live in Ky. so diving for them is pretty much out of the question. lol If it's illegal buy or sell them, how do people obtain them?

I give the shells to friends and family.

There are abalone farms that can sell the meat and the shells.

Im not sure. I just use whatever they sell at my local hardware store.

I know if you cut or grind into the shell the dust is toxic so be careful.

Is there a way to polish the inside of the shell without using polyurethane?

Like buffing it or something?

Not that I know of.

I would ask somebody that works with abalone jewelery.
