This DIY project is how I clean and paint some of my old abalone shells.
These shells are not for sale. It is illegal to buy or sell wildlife so don't even ask.

  • So what do you do with them? I do inlay work, and I cut, file, level, and polish these by hand. I have to buy these after they are made into "ashtrays"... So how do I obtain these legally without paying for an "ashtray"? I live in Ky. so diving for them is pretty much out of the question. lol If it's illegal buy or sell them, how do people obtain them?

  • @11harrison11

I give the shells to friends and family.

There are abalone farms that can sell the meat and the shells.

  • Very nice video. What kind of filters do you use for the mask?

  • @bphoto21

Im not sure. I just use whatever they sell at my local hardware store.

I know if you cut or grind into the shell the dust is toxic so be careful.

  • Greetings:

Is there a way to polish the inside of the shell without using polyurethane?

    Like buffing it or something?

    Thanks

    Not that I know of.

I would ask somebody that works with abalone jewelery.
