This song was not a charol, also pointed out by Bob Hallett, but was a very common song in many languages, and was sung not at Christmas only but all around the year. This song was pretty much a common folk song, not a charol.

@jay40drummer Carols were very popular as dance songs from the 1150s to the 1350s, after which their use expanded as processional songs sung during festivals;carols went into a decline due to Calvinist aversion to "nonessential" things associated with Roman Catholicism. However works for Christmas that they termed carols; and folk-carols continued to be sung in rural areas. This Carol actually dates from circa 900 AD and oh by the way, just so you know;;; its spelled carol

Bob Hallett pointed out on the DVD for the Hard and the Easy that some version of this song exists in almost every culture, or at least, western culture.

Yes I have the album and the dvd. I think this is a great song and from what I understand has been around circa 900 AD
