I'd still boil the water or treat it with ozone to kill any microbes that may have gotten past the filter.

Why does every one show the finished product and not how to build one. This was a waste of time.

To get better flow the filter should be elevated and the water should not have to travel back up to get down to your clean container. Back washing is a very bad idea as was previously stated it will mix the toxins around and after a few runs you will end up with super toxic water. When it gets dirty dig some of the sand out and refill don't mix it. As to it not taking care of bacteria its not 100% but this same basic idea is used in sewage plants around the country, it does work if used right.
