actually your wrong...thats the problem with the U.S navies experimental Real Gun...it generates way to much heat which erodes the rails limiting its usage...the projectile would be really hot after it would have left the gun so this idea wouldn't really work

Well it stopped being sci-fi a couple of years ago. The US is already having plans for cruisers equipped with railguns firing spear like objects into space that would impact anywhere on earth.
Supposedly the force released upon impact would rival the force of a nuclear blast.
Scheduled to be complete around 2020... ._.
