do you ever use bucktail???
like with a tandem hook?

No, bucktail is so old fashioned, to dull and the hairs will break. Why use materials that lead to a fly falling apart after a few fish?

Actually someone can use a 6-8 weight rod for smaller saltwater species such as weakfish, reds, stripers, etc.
An 11 or 12 weight fly rod is usually too small to land a bill fish. Most people I know cast a 12-13 weight for sailfish, marlin etc.
