We flew the Convair series for Dow Jones & Company for many a year. They are one of the most reliable aircraft ever devised. Our R-2800 powered fleet replaced some of the 600's with a better that 98% reliablilty rate. I miss them.
We've still got passenger carrying Cv580(440)s in NZ, operated by Air Chathams and Air Pioneer. Sometimes they get hauled onto the Air New Zealand network during busy times and easily hold their own against the dawdling Q300 and boring ATR 72s. And everybody always mentions just how comfortable the old girls are.
My first flight was in a Delta 440 in 1965. Was happy to see them replaced by DC-9's a few years later. Now, I'd give anything to see and ride one of those old birds again. The cabins were noisier than jets, with alot of vibration, but the seating was much more comfortable.
Funny how todays 50 seat RJ's are about the same size and weight, but seem so much smaller inside.
I think only the European airlines referred to the 440's as Metropolitans.
Those were the GOOD ol days, when it was still FUN to fly on the airlines, days before the TSA!

I love the part where they talk about high altitude. 15000 feet. :)

Great Old Airplane. I've got about 2000 hours on that old bird. About 1990 of that was with both engines running.

These were good planes to fly in..... back when flying was part of the adventure of the journey.... not the pain it is today.
