Original Columbia Records #45944 Radio Station Promotional Copy

Debut 11/24/73
Peaked at #1 for 3 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

This is the original hit version, where this particular vocal mix can only be heard on the original 45 RPM record, which is what everyone heard when this record was a hit.
Since then, alternate vocal tracks were used on later LP's & CD's. In fact, the version heard almost all the time today is NOT this original hit version. Oldies radio seems to only play the alternate takes.

Written by Marvin Hamlisch, A. Bergman & M. Bergman-Raster.
Produced by Marty Paich
Arranged & Conducted by Marty Paich

From the Columbia Motion Picture Production of "The Way We Were".

  • @wmbrown6 You have a pair of good ears and a sensible heart.

  • @mannail888 - It should be noted that both the album and single versions of "The Way We Were" used the exact same instrumental track; it was in Ms. Streisand's vocal performance that there were a multitude of differences. Needless to say, since I heard this I've been drawn to the single version . . .

  • I remember hearing this on the car radio and knowing then that this voice and song were "perfection"...I remember (10 years old) telling my mom "doesnt' she have a beautiful voice>" and her agreeing...tears in her eyes....love it! Streisand is the best

  • Of all the "The Way We Were" recorded studio version by Streisand, this one stands out as the greatest. Here, Streisand is much less self-conscious in making art than she is on the more widly circulated often heard album version. Because of that, this version jolts the soul and caress the heart in a way the album version doesn't. And the soundtrack version from the movie, great that it is and it is truly great, is a little bit too lachrymose to some taste.

  • best version....have the 45 as well.....

  • I never relaized until I read a review today for the Way We Were album that the version of this song that was on the album and all other lp and cd releases was another version and not the original single vocal! I think this vocal is much better, and like her earlier versions of Happy Days and My Coloring Book, not found on any cd release. I hope that Barbra will allow this and other previously unreleased on cd tracks to be put on a new compilation.

  • @colormemichael - Same here. Both promo and original stock (with lacquers mastered by Annex Studios in Hollywood; later 45's were mastered at Allen Zentz Recording in Hollywood).

  • Wow!!! Excellent!!! I think this might be the only place on the Internet to hear the original pop radio single mix with the alternate vocals by Ms. Streisand. Awesome!!! Thank you so much!!!
