I should add that present day textbooks teach a kind of Darwinism which many research scientists do not support. For example, Lynn Margulis, the greatest authority on microbial evolution, calls Darwinism a "religion."
Perceived moral deterioration of society was one cause for Tennessee's passing a law against teaching evolution. Another cause was the fact that at thin 1925 few scientists supported Darwin's theory. This was made clear in a speech to the American Association for the Advancement of Science given by the British geneticist William Bateson. The circumstances and the facts of the trial are explained in Chapter Three of Eugene Windchy's book The End of Darwinism.
