This video is a little different from my other stuff. Here's the story...

I decided to propose to my girlfriend on New Year's Eve. I thought hard about how I could do it in a fun, off-beat way, since we're a pretty off-beat couple. This video is what I came up with.

Her and I are fans of bad b-movies. So before we went out to the bar on New Years Eve, I suggested we sit down and watch a bad movie on VHS while we have a few drinks. My girlfriend agreed. I chose a movie called "The Glove", which I'd been wanting to see for quite some time. But what she didn't know is that I had taken the time a day earlier to modify the footage to fit my needs.

We sat down to watch the movie with a few friends who knew what I was up to and wanted to see the action go down. The first few minutes of "The Glove" played, and we made fun of it like we usually do. But then, the shot quickly faded to black and a series of old drive-in Intermission ads began to play. Needless to say, my girlfriend was confused but amused. We watched on as a "special announcement" told her that it was New Years Eve. She was amazed by the coincidence. My plan was working perfectly.

Then it got personal. Her name flashed on the screen and she knew something was up. Then I cut to footage from another movie- the 1990 Australian action-comedy "Ranko", in which my girlfriend's real life father proposes to her real life mother. They had met during the making of the movie, fell for each other, and got married in real life after they got married in the movie. (Are you following all of this??)

The final title card- "So Caragh, What do you say?"- set me up. After the video finished, I got down in front of my girlfriend on one knee. The look on her face was more or less pure shock. But fortunately, she said yes.

Here's how I put it together:
First, I digitized about 5 minutes of "The Glove" and stuck it in final cut.

Then I downloaded the intermission footage from www.archive.org- a free archive site.

Then I taped the proposal portion of "Ranko" on my Canon video camera and captured the video to Final Cut.

Finally, I typed in everything I wanted to say to my girlfriend in Final Cut and put a little gaussian blur on it to give it an old school movie theater feel. I chopped the whole thing together and exported to DVD.

The next day, my girlfriend- excuse me- my fiance- told me that she was impressed by all the work I had put into it, and thought the way I proposed was perfect. So I'm glad it all worked out!
