Maunsell's masterpiece was his V Class 4-4-0 design, all of which were named after public schools in the area served by the Southern Railway - earning them the epithet 'Schools Class'. Here we see a rather over decorated No.30915 'Brighton' hauling a Royal Race Special along the Tattenham Corner line (from Victoria to the eponymous terminus), heading for the 1953 Epsom Derby on 6th June that year. Afterward, we see the all Pullman 'Bookies Belle' hauled by another Maunsell engine, a member of the small N1 class of three-cylinder 2-6-0 locomotives developed from the more commonplace two cylinder N Class. No.31822, the first of the class to be built by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway is also on route to the 1953 Derby.

  • Love how they've turned it out but wouldn't the cameraman have been carted off?
