This neo-traditional composition for Balinese gamelan is based on the classical bebarongan style used to accompany the long sacred dance drama Calonarang. I use the bebarongan structure and add foreign musical materials to construct the meter and elaborate the piece. There are three main sections: kawitan (introduction), pengawak (the main body), and pengecet (the conclusion).
In the kawitan I use the western idea of harmony, played simultaneously by the melodic instruments, on top which the genders are doing free rhythm style melodic counterpoint. In the pengawak the South Indian tala system is being used. The meter is unpredictable for the listener, which gives a new taste or feeling (rasa) to the interlocking figuration (kotekan). In the pengecet I adopt African concepts such as the 12/8 rhythmic patterns of African bells as the foundation of the basic melody, with the kotekan in ternary subdivision. I conclude the piece combining the three musical traditions (Balinese, African and western).
