They were known in the past as Nuosu. The Chinese call them the Yi or Yizu. We call them the Mab. You may have heard your elders say "go borrow from the Mab and Chinese"? That's because they were major loan sharks in the day.... ripped off Hmong through high interest loans made against the land in usury loan schemes, the intent being to take over Hmong land. This is why illiterate Hmong were forced into the mountains from the fertile valleys.

Because Miao has negative connotations in Chinese (ie. weeds), and Hmong doesn't. That's like saying African Americans should settle with just being called Blacks or Negroes, or Native Americans should settle with being called Indians. It's a sensitive topic, but I think most Hmong outside of Chinese control prefer to be called Hmong.

I looked at hmongunivers's clip,comparing words,amao count one to ten is very close to west hmong/miao dialect,I think we're still a family.bcuz our dialect s very close to each others.even body parts still name very much the same.only some different due to long time seperation and asimilation to other culture and language.

Hmong in USA? what name to use or call themselves? How about Hmiao. Because I have seen lots of literature with the name of Hmong/Miao.  If we don;t want the slash in between, we can shorten that to HMIAO. This is a good abbreviation for Hmong/Miao after all and it's fair because we take the first "HM" initial of Hmong and plus the IAO finals of MIAO. HM+IAO = HMIAO. Let me know what you guys think. This is also AHMAO, HMU -all Miao subgroup

My dad has been to these festival before...He was part of the Yunnan ahmao and Hmong group in the Guizhou Lusheng festival...
