Melba is toast.

Years ago, during research on Australian coloratura Stella Power, I was put in touch with an elderly gentleman who knew Melba. He alleged that her death was the result of an infection that developed after a face-lifting procedure that at that time was risky. Supposedly, this was never reported in the papers and was known only by a close inner circle. I've wondered over the years whether or not this was true.

Melba passed away on 23 February 1931 in a Sydney hospital of blood poisoning which probably developed as the result of a fever she contracted on a trip to Egypt late the previous year. Her funeral took place three days later at the Scots' Presbyterian Church in Melbourne, which her father had built and where as a teenager she had sung in the choir. She was interred at the cemetery in the Melbourne suburb of Lilydale.

Great, I had not see it before.

On Melba's tomb there is inscribed a touching quotation from Mimi's Farewell in La Boheme:
"Addio senza rancor".
