This is a video that explains how to practice & master the bass drum hi hat pattern played on the studio recording of Led Zeppelin's Good Times Bad Times. Both in the proper triplet format, as well as in 16ths.

  • Hi terry great vid.Would you be able to give some instruction on the opening fill of good times bad times?I love this fill and to learn how to do it would be awesome.

  • @1zedlepplin Sure!

  • @Terry Btw ever try tuning a Vintage Steel Tama 6.5x14 to try and sound like Bonham. One of your videos shows which heads to use and wide Snare wires which im going to experiment with before spending over 3 bills for the Ludwig. Although the Ludwig is nice.

  • @fatchoppers01 The snare I've been playing in the last couple videos is a steel-shelled Yamaha 6.5x14. It can be tuned to sound very much like Bonham's.

There's something about aluminum that gives it sort of a throaty sound..

  • @ Terry ......Im thinking of picking up a Ludwig LM402 but damn they are expensive. I see the Acrolites for less. How do they compare, Bonzo had the Chrome over aluminum correct??

  • @fatchoppers01 They are pricey, but you can sometimes find them for a good price. I actually do prefer the sound of the Acrolites (the 'black power coated' type). Yes-Bonham supposedly preferred the Ludaloy (aluminum) shells. I'll look around and try to find a good price on a 6.5 Supra or Acro for you....

  • Mate! I've been trying to learn this pattern off youtube for bluddy months, and when i was watching your video the penny finally dropped!!

  • So basically John Bonham was able to do a complete drum roll with his right foot.

  • @yonatawodi Thanks Yona!

  • Good stuff as usual man. Same as what's in Carmine Appice's "Realistic Rock" book. It's always good to hear how good the Hi-Hat and two hits on he bass creates that awesome sound. Well done!

You clearly know how to tune your drums as well which is something that many players overlook.

    Sounds good and heavy!

    Cheers
