The battle was about to begin and the British didn't want Francis Scott Key to go warn the Americans that the British were going to attack so they kept him hostage. He watched the British attempt to destory Fort McHenry and as he saw the Americans winning, he wrote a poem and it became to National Anthem.
The Star Spangled Banner became the National Anthem on March 3, 1931. The tune to the Star Spangled Banner came a popular drinking song that they sang in the 1800's.
