Ask your buddy about the Russian Bear.

I remember that. It was in the Indian Ocean. The B-52 was from Diego Garcia.

was aboard Ranger '67 through '69, radio silence practice for 2 weeks, then closed in on Vladivostok, Russia and launched several aircraft that immediately returned to the ship that then hightailed further out into international waters. several Bear bombers came out and were intercepted by F4's from the Ranger, the captain put the conversation with one pilot named Ivan on ships intercom for all to hear. photo of Bear bomber and F4 from Ranger is in the '69 cruise book.

Likely part of Task Force 71 when North Korea shot down an EC-121 Constellation near Ch'ongjin, only about 75 miles from China and 150 miles south of Vladivostok.
It should be noted that this took place a little over a year after the USS Pueblo was boarded and captured. As far as I know, the USS Pueblo is still a commissioned ship of the US Navy.

Do you have any film of the Russian Bear flyby?? It was a day or two after leaving Subic Bay headed to the gulf, January '91.

Sorry, I do not. I do know there have been two such "public" events in the last five years.
