Where do all the numbered verses in the Bible come from?

Bibledex has already made a video about every book in the Bible - now we're going to concentrate on individual verses. This is the video to start our new series.

  • Who at periodic table of videos thought it a good idea to "like" supernatural anti-science videos? Very disappointing.

  • @kasslloyd you think this video is supernatural and/or anti-science? I'm sorry, but that's stupid...

  • For what it's worth I too think the Period Table brand doesn't sit well with discussions about religion. It's fine if they both exist but just like at Nottm Uni, I wouldn't expect to find the Chem dept endorsing Bible study.

Also, if you want to purely intellectually study religious texts then the Holy Indian tradition (Vedas, Upanishads etc) has so much more to offer than this One God Wonder.

  • @chrisofnottingham I didn't upload this onto periodicvideos by mistake did I? No, seems to be here on "Bibledex" and has "Bibledex" in the title. Phew!

I just tweeted it because I thought it was a funny story about the horse and versification being a bit ropey. It was a tweet... Not a paper in Nature!

Funny how "scientific" types can be every bit as protectionist about their sacred subject as the "religious fanatics" they're so quick to denigrate! Not you of course, just in general terms. :)

  • @bibledex I don't follow either on Twitter. For whatever reason it was appeared on my You Tube home page with a Periodic Table connection. I'm not sure if it was just 'Liked by' but I think it was actually 'Uploaded by'. Not sure now. I get similar problems with Facebook sometimes when I do stuff from one account and it appears as if done from another

  • @chrisofnottingham sorry if that happened. weird YouTube glitch!?

I just find EVERYTHING fascinating and want to share it all - whether it's quantum mechanics, the crystal structure of bismuth or how a guy in France divided the most famous book in history into thousands of tiny verses... it's all knowledge...

But I know some people like just science stuff... some just like Bibledex.... some "polymaths" like it all... either way, I'm grateful when anyone takes time to watch & comment! :)

  • @Trichomes503 nothing with wrong with intellectual discussion of texts, whether the subject is true, imaginary or in doubt.... scholars study Shakespeare don't they and they take it very seriously? I hope you troll those videos too? :)

This video is most certainly not discussing anything imaginary... They are discussing how the most famous text in history has evolved into its current format with chapters and verses!?

"Person X in Year Y added numbers to chapter Z" What is imaginary about that?

  • Question for the videographer: Why should one even bother about the specific fairy tale book called "Bible" when so many other fairy tale books are floating around? Or do you really *believe* what's written in that book are true? As historic text of historic significance it's fine, but dedicating a complete channel for a specific book?! That's unfair!

  • @bibledex No, but periodicvideos favorited this video, which implies periodic videos endorses religion... which is faith based and therefore inherently anti-scientific. Perhaps someone forgot to log out of periodic videos before they started marking videos for personal use. I don't know... just speculating. Have a nice day.

  • I like theological history and theology in general. It doesn't mean I accept any of the beliefs, but the fact that people do and these are the reasons why are fascinating.

Besides, there isn't JUST chemical or physical science. There's social science too.

  • For all of those who are wondering why their "Periodic Videos" subscription linked them to this, it's because Periodic Videos liked this video, and since you have them as a subscriber, you see any videos that are liked by them in your subscription box on the main page of YouTube. It shouldn't matter what subject matter is liked from one department to the other, it's the fact that there is a mutual respect for each subject matter, and University unity. Personally, I think this is a good thing.

  • It's funny to see people acting "smart" in these videos by saying that the Christian God or whichever God is unreal.

    To the smart people:

Don't you guys have better things to do? It's common logic not to watch videos you dislike.

Take this video as a... Reference. No one is forcing you guys to worship, believe, etc.

  • @kasslloyd Hahaha lame

  • It's a BOOK! I like explosions AND words. Thanks.

  • Just wanted to say I disagree with those who are commenting it is not appropriate to link Periodic Videos with Bibledex. For starters, I would not have found this very interesting channel otherwise. Secondly, none of the videos I've seen have been proselytizing - only presenting the Bible as a subject for academic study - and what's wrong with that? Since it is arguably the most influential book ever written the Bible is certainly deserving of serious study - whatever your own beliefs are.

  • @bibledex i do like these vids but i would like to see it expanded to all the religions based on the Israeli god, (Christian, Jewish, Islam, etc) as an atheist i like to learn about religion it makes for better arguments when you have a better education about the religion then the believer.

  • Interesting video, a refreshing change from the science videos I'd usually be watching!
