The Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky has unveiled the design for a major expansion and renovation of its facilities, encompassing 200,000 square feet of new and renovated interior and exterior space. Growing out of the Museum's long-range master planning process, the Speed commissioned wHY Architecture—led by Kulapat Yantrasast, working with his partners Richard Stoner and Yo Hakomori —for the project.

  • Dear Felice, Thank you for your feedback about the virtual tour of the Museum’s upcoming renovation and expansion. We welcome all visitors regardless of race, economic status and disability to enjoy the current and future facility of the Speed Art Museum.

  • In addition, the limestone walls were not original to the Speed’s construction. The museum has been working closely with Louisville Metro historic preservation on the project.

  • You will be happy to know that the limestone that previously formed fragments of various walls on the Museum grounds has been donated to the Olmsted Parks Conservancy for reuse in Metro Parks projects throughout the city of Louisville. The Speed is being very conscientious in trying to reuse as many leftover building materials as possible as we move forward with our expansion and renovation plans.

  • nice 3D.. :)

  • This is nit picking but did anyone else notice in this virtual tour there are nothing but white people. Okay maybe one perhaps two female avatars might be African American and one oriental. But no males but white ones. And hey no people with disabilities either. Only healthy people visit museums? I know it is only a cartoon but shouldn't it represent the Speed Art Museum realistically.

  • It's too bad the demolition workers couldn't have saved any of the 100 year old limestone blocks that made up the long low walls that framed the front of the museum along 3rd St. yesterday. Demolishing Mrs. Speed's house right next door last week, then hauling off the Victorian era wall that (once) guarded the front of the museum since it opened, Guess this is the (shortsighted) price we have to have to pay for Progress, and just a few hundred yards away from a Historic Preservation District!!!

  • WOW it looks really great. I cant wait to go and see this in person when everything is completed.
