  • great overview, I agree nothing beats Word 2007 and the blank page, but what do you use after trying out these apps now that you're in a revision stage and not participating in Nanowrimo this year?

  • @bullshitfish Great question. My editor uses the Track Changes function in Word. I've found that to be a really useful tool in my revisions, so I've been doing all my revising in Word 2010 (I've upgraded from Word 2007 since the making of this video).

One thing I think people might not take into account when choosing apps--which I probably should have addressed in the video--is collaborating with an editor or a beta reader during revisions. Word is the standard tool when it comes to that.

  • Are you planning on doing Nanowrimo this year?

  • @boxerini Not this year. It was fun when I did it a while ago, but right now I'm putting all my energy into publishing my first novel a few weeks from now. Thanks for asking. :)

  • @MLMartinJr Oh really? Thats great! How did you find the experience of Nano helped you in creating and publishing?

  • @boxerini More than anything, NaNoWriMo taught me about my own personal style of writing. That process gave me confidence that I could produce a lot of words within a relatively short time span (even though I didn't win NaNoWriMo). But I also learned that I actually prefer to take my time building a story. So, its like I have a choice now. I can write fast if I need to or slow when I choose to.

  • OpenOffice is almost exactly like old school Microsoft office, in case anyone wants that but can't afford it.

I'm totally going to try out yWriter. That sounds like the best app ever.

  • I have Scrivener, but for my blank page, i use Apples 'Pages', and at £13.99, it's pretty cheap. And it works on my iPhone.

    Good choices, good video.

  • I like your video, the part about the evil prompt cracks me up a bit.

Not to jinx your mojo, best of luck and crack your toe. ;-)

For those who can't afford MS office 2010. several open source word processors Libreoffice, WriteMonkey and bean for the mac OS X. With WriteMonkey it's looks clunky but it's decent and also eliminates distraction. As the saying goes nothing beats a blank page.

  • SCRIVENER IS NOW OUT FOR WINDOWS! YAY!

  • I may try out Y Way until I can Scriviner!

  • I was very happy when you had Scrivener as Number 1!! I just found that last month and used it for NaNoWriMo!! It's an EXCELLENT program!!

  • Look at Celtx and its free

  • An intelligent and perceptive review. Thanks!

  • Scrivener is great tis true, it is now available for windows users!

  • Meh No mac writer is gonna like this list!
