Live Drag Show Performance 2011 HD ~Swedish Sapphire~

"Jealousy is a sickness...intimidation are the symptoms...and I am the CURE. The Swedish Sickness is coming...where's YOUR vaccination? Hello and welcome UCSD my name is Swedish Sapphire, your fetish star and local celebrity. You may call me a drag queen, but I call myself an entity...an entity for CHANGE. I present to you tonight myself and my accompanying entourage of Harajuku Boiz. I was once asked if I ever got stage fright. My reply was simple, 'I don't get stage fright...I give audience FRIGHT.' Let the rumors begin!" -- S.S.




This is the third year I have performed in Divas in Denial at UCSD. It was meant to be my final act at UCSD and so the theme was "The Death of Swedish Sapphire." It is meant to show a lot of underlying themes of the reality that I am not a drag queen, but identify as genderqueer, hence the wig flying off and the statement in the intro. The beginning is meant to show mind-controlled and brainwashed barbie dolls in a plastic world where all our thoughts are fed to us by societal constructs and the government so we can't be free thinkers. It explains briefly the idea of this constant jealousy and intimidation people feel towards me and the only way to cure it is to actually get to know me and realize I am a normal down to earth human being. "Intimidation are the symptoms and I am the cure." I also try to deconstruct the binary of man and woman (my androgynous "drag queen" look) and explain how I am more of an entity for change in societal ideals than a "drag queen" performing and entertaining blindly. It also shows statements on legalizing an equality in marriage hence the wedding dress. It shows the hate against transgendered people and queer people in general which is why I am shot onstage as a hate crime. It was supposed to be shocking even though the crowd cheers. There is also an underlying story between Swedish Sapphire and one of the Harajuku Boi Back-up Dancers. There are also subtle religious references on sin, the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, and holding one's purity until marriage. The Harajuku reference is a shout out to my love for Japanese Fashion and the Harajuku Scene full of individuality and being yourself. This performance was meant to have it all: A long intro sequence with a God Voice, carried onstage in a wedding dress by hot boiz, costume changes, wigs flying off, a kiss, a lift onstage, and finally a death. (Is a resurrection in the future?)
