basically eric is effy's maker. the three vampires live in a true blood type world where vampires are known and edward is a vampire that relies solely on trueblood while eric and effy feed off humans. though like twilight they can be in the sun, they just don't dazzle. edward is in love with effy and wants to get her as far away from eric as possible. eric willl never let that happen and until he releases her effy will remain loyal to him...or so he thinks...
