An excerpt from F. W. Murnau's 1926 masterpiece, Faust. This is from the first part of the film; Satan unleashes the plague upon the town where doctor Faust lives. With death all around, some people go into a wild and desperate revelry, others seek the word of the Lord with a sort of holy abandon. Faust learns that all his knowledge is to no avail. He burns his books, including the Bible, but then one very special and sinister tome captures his eye ...
The music is from Gustav Holst's The Planets and Hector Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique; both film and music has been edited to fit each other.
Please note that the sound has not been compressed before uploading, which means that quiet passages are very quiet, and loud ones are very loud.
With youtube's 10 minute limit, I've had to divide the excerpt in two parts, so look out for Faust (Murnau 1926): new music (2/2)!

  • there's no words in this movie????

  • @nbeachbum222 Not a single word. Murnau never got to make a talkie.

  • @hardtimesincountry haha, i was just kiddin around. its a running joke me and my friend have. one time at NYU some girl came up to him trying to get him to join some film club and was telling him about The 400 Blows (that's what they were showing), and the first thing he responded was, "Is there subtitles in that movie?"

and she totally didn't get he was messing with her.

I'm actually trying to write a paper on Murnau right now. Great stuff. I wonder what he would have done with words.

  • @nbeachbum222 Well, I'll skip the lecturing this time then :-) Good luck with your paper!

  • Magnificent sense of shape, scale, and frame.

  • Murnau was a genius - one of the truly great directors.

  • Goodness, the prints of Murnau films that are available these days are so beautifully clear compared to those that were around even a decade ago. This is a pleasure to watch.

  • classic love it, it can take several viewings which is very rare

  • In Murnau's Nosferatu, Renfield, or "Knock" is played by Alexander Granach, who also gave brilliant performances as Mephisto from Faust in Berlin.
