French President Nicolas Sarkozy has used a prime time television interview to lay out his plan to rejuvenate the economy.

In his "Social Tax" plan, which he hopes to push through before the April election, taxes on goods and services will rise so as to reduce the burden on French companies, which he says will allow them to hire more staff.

Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland reports from Paris.

  • Shame on the people of this world for believing the same lies over and over again.

What else could it be but that we are surely doomed.

  • good luck, france!

i hope with the new taxes you can solve the unemployment better - because the state has more money to help out and to invest in new technologies.

may we stand together in the eurozone against british-hungarian ignorance, arrogance and economic failure. the world needs more quality products made in france instead of toxic banks from the financial markets.

  • "Vive Le France, Vive La Guerre, Vive Le Legionaire!

  • This is english.... Anyboby comments against Sarkozy are the British jealous...If Sarkozy wins hem Great Grand Paris

  • 35 work hours per week?1?1? No wonder their economy is going broke. How can they compete with the Germans or the British let alone China, Turkey and India?

  • European women can turn to porn for a job.

  • @manguy92 Yes, redirecting the tax burden to the consumer will not solve anything. Most likely consumer spending will decrease and these companies will lose business and profit as a result. I don't know much about France's economy, but raising taxes during an economic crisis/recession is definitely a bad idea.
