The great pre-War tenor Marcel Wittrisch with his frequent partner, Margarete Teschemacher heard in the love duet from Meyerbeer's opera The Huguenots. An incandescent performance, recorded in Berlin in 1932, but here taken from a British pressing because the original German masters were destroyed by the Nazis [Meyerbeer was ein Jude]. This is one of the great operatic recordings of all time. Wittrisch never sang better on disc and his climactic top D (without a trace of falsetto) is truly a vocal marvel that still tingles the spine. Yes, the cello section in the State Opera Orchestra should all be fired ~ but the singing! Nobody could do it better today. ENJOY!
