Self Conclusion - Prologue [Jonas]

Fade in, start the scene
Enter beautiful girl.
But things are not what they seem
As we stand at the edge of the world




Joe stood atop the hills of Hollywood, California, taking in the beauty below him. It was so peaceful; the skyline, the clear blue skies, and the ocean in the distance. No fuck this, I'm done with beauty, I'm done with her. How can someone do this to another? He thought to himself. What he wasn't aware of, however, was the beauty standing just ten feet away.


He turned his head to the right to see a girl standing there, mascara streaming down her face. She had no clue he was standing there, staring, until he cleared his throat. She turned and looked at him with confused eyes, still crying. "Excuse me, I had plans to die here. You're directly in my way and I bet you're going to say it's not right..." she looked down at the busy city below her.


He looked at her, confused as to why she was crying. He had only just set eyes on her but felt some kind of spark. He felt as if he knew her from somewhere. "I'm sorry, but do you have any idea what you just said? Do you know who you're talking to?"


She started to get angry at his question, more tears flowing out of her ice blue eyes. She knew who he was, she had actually been a fan of his years ago. She didn't want to let him know, that could possibly make her vulnerable. She stared into his deep brown eyes. "I don't really give a fuck, you have no idea who I am..." she started, but was cut off. "I know, but I'd like to change that soon... hopefully." Joe said, the girl's eyes now cutting through him like a thousand razor blades. He got chills, but noticed she was waiting for him to continue, to give her a good reason as to why she should stay in this world. "We all flirt with that little idea of self conclusion in one easy gesture. The trick... however... you should never act on it, no matter how unbearable your misery becomes." He couldn't believe the words coming out of his own mouth.


"Of course you'd say something like that, you're Joe Jonas. You have your whole life cut out for you," she started, then immediately regretted it, realizing that she just let him know that she knew exactly who he was. He looked at her, eyes wide with shock. It had been years since the band he and his brothers were in had faded out of the spotlight, he didn't know people still knew who he was. "You make it seem so easy to keep living, but tell me, Joseph, how am I supposed to seize this day when I feel so empty inside?"


"Trust me, nameless girl," he said. "Morgan," she chimed in. "Trust me, Morgan... I know you really want to jump. But I'm offering you an easy choice," he said.


"And what would that be?" Morgan inquired.


"Instead of dying... here... today," he started to say, then spoke softer and slower, "Living with me."


"Are you crazy?! You don't know me!" Morgan yelled, walking away from the edge of the cliff and closer to Joe.


"Well, I do know that your name is Morgan. And I've gotten you to walk away from the edge of this cliff," he stated, matter-of-factly. A grin spread across his face but faded when he realized she wasn't smiling back at him.


"Like I said, you don't know me," she repeated.


"I know, I know. But like I said before, I'd like to change that," he held out a hand, hoping she'd take it. Instead, she turned and walked back to the edge of the cliff, looking down. He walked behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist so if she tried to make any sudden movements, he could move the both of them back. She quickly turned her face towards him, stunned at the fact that someone would think of risking their own life to save hers. "Listen... I'd be lying if I said things wouldn't get hard. I could stand here all day, trying to convince you, but what good would that do either of us? Morgan, my offer stands and you must choose."


Morgan thought for a while, then turned her body to face his. "All right, you win" she looked down, admitting defeat. She looked back up and stared him straight in the eyes. "But, I only give you one night to prove yourself to be better than my attempt at... well, you know. I swear to God Joe, if you hurt me, I will leap. I will toss myself from these very cliffs and you will never see it coming," she said, raising her voice. She tilted her head down again, unsure as to why she was practically screaming at him. He had done nothing to her. Nothing except save her.


"Calm down Morgan, I know what you're going through," he said, pushing a piece of her brown hair out of her eyes.


"How could you possibly know?" she said, tears still streaming down her face. He wiped them away with the sleeve of his sweatshirt.


Joe continued, "Because... ten minutes before you got here, I was going to jump too..."


She looked at him, shocked. He grabbed her hand as they inched away from the edge of the cliff and walked off into the distance.
