The Cocteaus were much more than a band- to refer to them as such seems almost an insult. It sounds utterly pretentious and corny, but discovering the Cocteau Twins' music is more of a spiritual experience than anything- like finding redemption in nature or discovering your religious text of choice. Nothing else compares.

The first time I listened to CT it was through the album Treasure, and for a while I was convinced it was sung in its entirety in Japanese. It's like listening to Sigur Ros really, the experience is so much more fulfilling if you pretend they're singing in Elvish or something.

Well, that feeds into the Liz Fraser myth, I s'pose, but personally I can't read too much profundity into any song which sounds like it contains the phrase "saliva kiss"

I've always imagined this was a song about redemption. Like the story of someone who goes through something really horrible and traumatic but manages to overcome it. It sounds like holding someone in the dark after it's all over and soothing them saying 'it's gonna be ok' over and over.
I have a vivid imagination, alright.

no matter what media (music, film, literature, or the fine arts) the lens of history magnifies the good, and blurs/obscures the bad. All I'm say'n is there will always be good, ok, and a lot of bad in the present - the past always looks better because its easy to forget historical chaff.
