men actually wore this? wow, times really have changed.

  • @AugustusAurelianus1 Yes, you are most correct about the uniform of domestic servants being 18th c. I haven't entirely researched why this is, but from what I know about late 19th c. early 20th c. homes, there was a lot of revived interest in membership in the aristocracy. Especially after King Edward, it was easier for non-nobility to take part in affairs based on status. Louis style furniture was fashionable, just lots of reference to that period so likely that is a contributing factour.

  • @BreezesofConey Surely, my friend, that is a fact which had escaped me. Yet, I fear that status was the most important underlying consideration here, particularly during the mid 18th century. Interestingly, after they fell out of fashion (circa 1795), these wigs appear to have become part of the required garments for those working in the service of the nobility - such as valets - throughout the 19th century...

  • I was tempted to comment to the people who appear to have been misinformed in their responses but I like to stop and remember that no one is born knowing everything, we all start somewhere, and the fact that people are looking at these videos is very encouraging because that means someone is out there trying to learn and interested in learning so why belittle anyone? Snobbery should be a crime. Some mistakes are easily made by those who simply don't know yet.

  • @Wolfienka In fashion for who? Maybe if you were a member of the aristocracy in Europe or certain sects of society within the new land would your style of dress be similar to this. Most of the population did not own a wardrobe of this quality so it's likely even if they were the fashion today, the chance it would be within your means comparatively is slim. This is the equivalent of going to Giorgio Armani or Versace to shop.

  • @AugustusAurelianus1 The wigs had a very useful purpose in society in those days, head lice was rampant and the wearing of wigs to prevent the spread was one reason they were worn although a lot of this practice had to do with status.

  • Sadly they dont make clothes like that anymore

  • @AugustusAurelianus1 Clothes were made to show the social status of their owner,tailor-made and very expensive, poor people bought their clothes second hand..people didn t swim or sunbathe in summer then...and even the old dynasty egyptian nobles used wigs...how they became fashionable and then fell out of fashion is another story.

  • @AugustusAurelianus1

Wonderful clothes and music as well....thanks cherie for sending...kisssssssss....Judie:)

  • Although these suits do not appear to have been comfortable, especially during the summer, there is no question that most of them were quite elegant (except for the wigs, which fell out of fashion by the late 1780's - these wigs were just NOT something I would classify as "appealing" - lol)

    Great video - Congratulations!
