Malaysian police squashed a demonstration Wednesday near the venue of the East Asia Summit, detaining six opposition activists protesting human rights abuses at home as well as in Myanmar and Thailand.

Police briefly scuffled with a handful of activists and snatched their banners before they could be unfurled in a small park, about 100 meters (yards) from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (near the Petronas Twin Towers) where Asian leaders were meeting.

Uniformed police also took away plastic boxes containing pamphlets denouncing the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which held summit meetings on Monday and Tuesday before hosting the East Asia Summit with six other countries on Wednesday.

"ASEAN leaders have sat for two days and discussed nothing on human rights," said Tian Chua, one of the six people detained, before he was led away.

"Today ASEAN has proved itself to be a club of dictators who refuse to listen to any form of criticism from its people," said Tian, spokesman for Malaysian opposition People's Justice Party.

The party had planned a public demonstration to protest against ASEAN's failure to secure the freedom of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and to bring about democracy in that military-ruled country.

They also were protesting against alleged human rights abuses in Malaysia and in Thailand's southern provinces where the government is battling an Islamic insurgency.

Among those arrested were two women, one of whom was dragged to the ground as she shouted "police brutality, police brutality." All four were taken away in a police van.

Earlier, Zafar Ahmed, president of the Myanmar Rohingya Human Rights Organization in Malaysia said "Myanmar is a responsibility of all ASEAN countries.

"Release Aung San Suu Kyi ... and stop violation of human rights. Treat us with justice," he said.
