Yes it is rather annoying that you can't turn the board. And I also played the free version before they implemented ads. I bought it right after they started doing it - one ad every move is insane!!!
But I now play 5-10 concurrent games on it at all times. The random opponent feature is actually pretty cool. A bit of a mixed bag but I've found some optimal players to play with and it's fun!

Cool-- I might buy it after all--there were a whole lot of negative reviews for the game, though... and the most concerning was how you cant turn the board if you're black...
