Just read the book for the first time. I don't know if the author used the narrator of the story as his alter ego. But, it was a good read.

@ZLarryZB I thought the book was wonderful, one of my favorite books of all time. And like many of Hudson's South-American tales, I'm sure a great part of the narrator's character lies within him..

The only issue that I would take with the author is Abel's view that God is his enemy. People can be driven to despair by the terrible suffering and injustices and heartache of life in this world. But, God is not our enemy.

@ZLarryZB As for my personal view, I totally agree, though one could easily understand and sympathize with Abel. But in the classic novels I enjoy I never look for the author's views to agree with mine.. it really doesn't bother me, when everything else is written as beautifully as Hudson (for example) writes.

Well not really. I don't think they made love at all. Their life together was too short. She died soon after.
