The Glasair has no nose wheel steering... only differential braking.
Rudder effectiveness degrades rapidly as the aircraft slows below 70 MPH. Full left rudder was applied throughout this incident.
A brake line ruptures and the plane is pulled to the right. To avoid a runway light, the right brake was tapped just as we exited the pavement. My plan was to allow the plane to slow in the grass, after passing the culvert I would use the right brake to come to a stop ... the unseen erosion gully modified that plan.

  • Condolences. Yes, you do know how we feel about our little bird...

  • Happened to meself too. Glad you ok. When on final, convince yourself a brake failure will happen. Best solution is to apply full power, get back in the air and land on a long upsloped runway. Full flaps and at slowest safe flying speed. Many more happy flying hours.

  • wow that was scary I'm sure. Glad you two walked away unhurt.
