From Bandersnatch Coffeehouse, Denison University, Granville, Ohio, 15th March 1969.
John Denver was singing the Tom Paxton song "The Last Thing On My Mind".

From The Skip Weshner Show, KRHM-FM, Los Angeles, California, 23rd March 1970.
John Denver sang "The Last Thing On My Mind".
It's truly a beautiful song. It's a pity that John had never recorded it.

It's a lesson too late for the learning
Made of sand, made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turning
In your hand, in your hand

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know it was the last thing on my mind

You've got reasons aplenty for going
This I know, this I know
For the weeds have been steadily growing
Please don't go, please don't go

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know it was the last thing on my mind

As I lie in my bed in the morning
Without you, without you
Each song in my heart dies aborning
Without you, without you

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could've loved you better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know it was the last thing on my mind

Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could've loved you much better, didn't mean to be unkind
You know it was the last thing on my mind

  • Great post! JD should have lived long enough to see how popular his is on youtube. Amazing you can drop something you recorded in 1969 on the net for the world to appreciate!

  • Great song and video.. the last thing on John Denver's mind just might have been, why didn't I fill up both tanks or switch valves before now.

    He was an amazing person.

  • So beautiful. So heartfelt and tender. Thank you for posting.

  • I like John Denver. But The Womenfolk did a better version of this in my opinion. This is a little slow. But thanks for posting it.

  • Thank you - Dj

  • I played this song in years past and have enjoyed different versions played by others. But this is great. I've got to start performing it again. I forgot how great of a song it is.

    thanks

  • John gets so emotional into the song that he ends up singing it twice. Very sad

song. Lot of emotion in his singing.

    Thanks for posting.

  • Wow - what a treasure. Thank you.
