We're one year away from Hampton Roads' first light rail system to be "up and running." Is construction still on track? What about the plans for conventional, higher-speed, and high-speed rail in the region? State and local transportation leaders bring us up to date.
The challenge with light rail systems, like in places like Charlotte, St. Louis, Dallas, is that they are more patchwork transport systems than a comprehensive one in conjunction with highways, airports, intercity rail. Places like Denver and Portland are transforming the entire way people get around their metropolitan areas. These southern metros still are suburban, auto-centric regions and officials expect their 10-12 mile streetcar/commuter lines to explode all of a sudden.
