Note: THIS VIDEO IS NOT SUITABLE FOR YOUNGER AUDIENCES AND CONTAINS IDEOLOGICALLY SENSTIVE MATERIAL AND A CHARACTER "DEATH."

I AM NOT PROMOTING SUICIDE OR ROMANTICIZING DEATH! You really need to know what's going on in the musical to understand this, and you might also want to look up "Danse Macabre" on Wikipedia. Its more about how money and power don't buy happiness.

THE VIDEO IS NOT HISTORICAL, AND NEITHER IS THE MUSICAL IT IS BASED ON. THE CHARACTER "ELISABETH" HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HISTORICAL ELISABETH OF BAVARIA. Elisabeth never had a lover before Franz Joseph, Der Tod is a fictional character (though based on Elisabeth's favourite poet, Henrich Heine, who died before she became a fan of his poetry, and whom she never met), and Max did not arrange the marriage between her and Franz Joseph. Yes, they made a real historical tragedy into a romantic comedy, but I fell in love with the musical before I knew that Elisabeth was real. I don't really approve of their re-writing history for dramatic effect and sorry if it offends, but I liked the musical so much that nothing can really change my mind.

So, yes, I am very sorry if this music video is offensive to you, and I know it might be to Canadian/American audiences, since a lot of the symbolism is deeply rooted in European historical heritage. I was a bit offended by the musical before I did my research on it.

The musical itself is inappropriate for children, not only due to the role of Death, but also because it discusses Nazism, infidelity in marriage, prostitution, and contains language that could in itself get the musical an r-rating in the States. I would rate it either PG-13 or 14+. I do not recommend it for anyone who is depressed or has any sort of mental or self-esteem problems.

When I heard this song, I knew I had to make an amv to it for Sissi and Der Tod, as soon as I heard "little princess you have eyes like the reflection of stars" (because she always wore jewellery with stars). The story sort of follows the love story in the musical. Here's a translation:
Translators note:

The actual title "księżniczka" means "archduchess" or "lady" while "królewna" means "princess" (as in "queen to be"). However "księżniczka" is used as a term of affection like the English "little princess," and "Disney princess" is translated as "księżniczki Disney'a." It can be used to refer to the king's daughter so long as she is not the queen-to-be (Anastasia for example was a "księżniczka" since she was the youngest daughter). Because of this, I translated it as "princess" here, since in this song it's more like the term of affection that mother's and father's use for their daughters.

I translated "na to krzywo patrzył" as "he disapproved of it." It literally means "he looked at it from an angle" or "he looked at it with crossed eyes," but figuratively it means basically that he disapproved or had doubts about it.

Little princess you have eyes
Like the reflection of stars
My princess the treasures of stars
You have in your eyes
Little princess you and I --
She lived with her father the king
In a castle on the summit of giant mountains
Her heart belonged to
A boy who loved her
He was handsome and so brave
He brought her flowers every day
He sent the good magic of kisses
And he sang for her like this:
Little princess you have eyes
Like the reflection of stars
My princess I will find you
So don't forget me
Little princess the treasures of stars
You have in your eyes
My princess you and I --
She wanted to be only with him always
But her father the king disapproved of this
He swore to give her hand in three days
To the one who is the richest
They met for the last time
In the light of the moon
In the glow of the stars
He promised that some day
They would run away from here together
Little princess you have eyes
Like the reflection of stars
My princess I will find you
So don't forget me
Little princess the treasures of stars
You have in your eyes
My princess you and I
Nothing will separate us
On a winged stallion
He road in one day
They ran away high above the world
And they shine among the stars
Little princess you have eyes
Like the reflection of stars
My princess I will find you
So don't forget me
Little princess the treasures of stars
You have in your eyes
My princess you and I
Nothing will separate us

So, yeah, I hope you like it and I am sorry if it offends anyone. I hope that at least some of you can understand.

  • Wonderful, great video, I really like it.

Where's the clip from with Maike and Uwe, is it a TV commercial? I'd love to have it!

  • @DantarBlade Its part of my comments ;D XD

  • @mimineko828 Interesting! I'll have to go read the translation!

  • @DantarBlade Its sorta based on the life of the real Austrian empress Sissi, but the premise of the musical is that she is in love with Death. They have a love/hate relationship like a typical romantic comedy with the twist that if he kisses her, she dies. She loves him but she knows that being with him means giving up, so she keeps sending him away. At the end she is murdered and they hook up . . . You can watch the whole thing translated here nline :D XD

  • Hmm... I don't really understand it, though it is quite curious to me. I would need to understand what's happening in the musical. ^^
