  • @JeffroGymnast I posted before you made this response. The only way I can see running dual pipes back is if you equalize the pressure down stream from the headers with the use of an X-Pipe. I think Rogue Engineering made something like that for the E46 M3 but it wasn't an x-pipe in the traditional sense (a setup for a V8 for example) because all it really did was connect the left and right midpipes at one point downstream to equalize exhaust pressure.

  • @JeffroGymnast My comment was directed at SinaPouya90 initially when he was asking about a quad exhaust. I was further adding to the fact that there would be no benefit in running a dual/quad exhaust on an inline 6 motor. The only exception being the N54B30 due to the twin turbos. I thought it was questionable performance wise on the E46 M3 but I think it was an aesthetics choice more than anything else. The setup on this E90 sounds nasty and I know its proper for both sound and performance.

  • @foleygac Furthermore, i agree with you about the quad exhaust. Most people benefit the most from running a Y pipe from the header collectors into a single 3" pipe or similar.

  • @foleygac technically, all backpressure is detrimental to power/torque. Velocity is really what you need. If you get huge diameter pipes, you'd be slowing down the exhaust gasses. higher exhaust velocity means better scavenging, im sure you are already aware of that though. These pipes aren't large enough to be bad for power though, they are just designed to flow the gasses at a high velocity. And I think the second part of your comment was meant for SinaPouya90, i made no comment about quads.

  • @JeffroGymnast Reducing back pressure can help your engine breathe better and therefore improve power and response, but reducing back pressure too much can have an adverse effect. On an inline motor, particularly one with two headers like all BMW inline 6's it makes more sense to equalize the pressure between the two headers than run a quad exhaust.
