@arthusthefirst I asked you a question, have you seen a boat with a wing on it? Look for them on you-tube, there is an aircraft type wing on top. They DO SAIL STRAIGHT into the wind. Watch the video. Your thinking as a sailor not an engineer. Hence I mentioned the Bernoulli principle, changing the entire masts direction corrects the air flow across the plane of the sail. Again SEE the video, what they do with the wings on the top of the cabin, is what the dyna rig does with sails.SEE A VIDEO!
@TheWickedwoodie Yes thank you. I know how to sail-And i know that you are totally wrong.. NO SAIL BOAT can go strait up wind.. if you do what you said, you'll go backward. And yes, Maltese Falcon needs to tack. For that matter there si a special technique that were used by old Tallships, on wich i've sailed several times... You rotate the front mast first, he will help the ship to pass the wind, during that time, the other masts turn together, and the immense weight of the ship keeps the speed
@arthusthefirst As you know in sailing going close to upwind, can be done. As much as 45 degrees, to as little as 15 degree from straight into the wind. So you point her into the wind, as you rotate the sails the 45 to 15 degrees off center. The wind still crosses the sail in a Bernoulli effect fashion, delivering lift or thrust in this case. Look up Dyna rigged sailing systems. The inventor is from Germany. Ever seen a boat with a wing on top? Same principle, rotate the wing into the wind.
@TheWickedwoodie Are U sure ??? what do you mean no tacking required ?¿ Sailing strait up wind is impossible, even with dynarig system ... I'd like to see where you did read that ... ? thx for information
Sweet video, I've always wanted to see them in "action." However she was NOT tacking. The Dyna Rigged sails turn to the wind. She can sail straight up wind. NO TACKING required. You did get a great shot, thank you for sharing it with us.!! I love the way the pendents stayed pointing in to the wind, and watching the sails fill up. It must have been NUTS on the water that day! Didn't someone hit her that day, or in that Bay? Thanks again for sharing. I've got MAST envy!
Looks about as maneuverable as my house
Race? What's the handicap on this one?

It would be a pain because when it leans everything you have sitting out would slide away haha.
