I don't have the game, but assuming trolls regenerate and don't regenerate from fire, he was probably damaged by fire, and temporarily damaged by the lightning. He healed from the lightning and not the fire, till you killed him with more fire. That's probably why he kept getting back up. I would suggest using only fire next time.. for trolls.
