People forget how much Britain and France and the other European powers dominated the Middle East (and African and Asia). When they collapsed as powers as a result of WW2, they left a highly unstable setup across the formerly colonized/ruled lands. The US, for all its military and economic power, is clueless in operating in the post-colonial parts of the world.
