A young woman named Helen Stoner consults the detective Sherlock Holmes about the suspicious death of her sister, Julia. One night, after conversing with her sister about her big day, she suddenly reappeared in her room, struggling to breathe, and died soon afterwards. Julia had been engaged to be married and had she lived would have received an annual 250 GBP annuity from her late mother's income. Now Helen is engaged to be married. Holmes' investigation of the mother's estate reveals that its value has decreased significantly, and if both daughters had married, Dr. Roylott, Helen's ill-tempered and violent stepfather, would be left with very little, while the marriage of even one would be crippling. Therefore, the main suspicion falls on him.

Jeremy was to my mind the most classical of modern day actors. He could express so much just with his eyes and the most subtle of body movements alone, he really seemed to be able to feel the part he played as Sherlock Holmes with intensity much like the old silent movie actors did in their time. A time when acting had to be very emotional and expressive to captivate without the use of sound. In the hope of illustrating my point I have made this video using a very quite low paced tune, so those observing can just watch the scenes and hopefully see what I mean. The music used is the theme Music from the orginal motion picture of "The Thing".

Special thanks to Kevin the snake!:p

  • What's the woman's name? She is really very beautiful

  • Hi, her name is Rosalyn Landor.

  • What I find most interesting about "The Speckled Band" is two reactions Holmes has in dealing with the case. The first where he bends back the fire place poker and chuckles at the step father's absurdity and the second being when his hand shake in fear knowing what the night will bring.

I think your video reflects the sense of desperation the female character feels and the exotic nature her evil step father is attracted to. Very, very well done!!!

  • Thank you! I really wanted to capture her distress, and how painful the loss of her sister was.

Holmes hand shaking was a fantastic moment, I'm in full agreement with you. It made the events taking place so much more realistic. Its one of the only times you see Holmes actually openly scared makes him so human after all. Jeremy acted that part so beautifully.

How true...and the schemer falls into the pit.
