Secret Life Of Bees

This was our 11th grade English project for Mr. Lams. This comes from Goodrich High School class of 2007. The movie stars Josh Fisher, Alex Kauer, Adam Kauer, Jeremy Nord, and Matt Rowan. The story is Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd.

Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of 14 year-old Lily Owens, whose life is shaped by her blurred memory of the afternoon of her mother's accidental death. When Lily's black "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three racists in town, they escape to Tiburon, South Carolina.

Lily is lonely at home and school and is abused by her angry father, T. Ray. However, with the help of August Boatwright, one of three sisters at whose farmhouse Lily and Rosaleen become guest workers, she is able to find that she has many people who love and care for her.

Lily is faced with trying to find out who she truly is because up until this time she has never been able to ask about her past or learn about her childhood. Lily does this in many ways, such as writing down her thoughts in a notebook, and finding her first love, Zachary Taylor. She finds out who she really is when she learns about her mother's past since the memory of her mother had always been a mystery and constant question to her.

Due to the constant maltreatment by her father T. Ray Lily chooses to run away with Rosaleen. She finds a picture of her mother, Deborah Fontanel Owens, and tries to find out more about her. She finds a small, wooden plaque with an image of a black Virgin Mary pasted upon it, with the words "Tiburon, SC" carved on the back. She goes there with Rosaleen and finds 3 sisters named August, May, and June Boatwright. There, she uncovers more truth about her life than she had ever known before.
