Maya 2011 - Earth view along the terminator. Please view in HD.

Music: The Noisettes - Pink Sweater. Album: itsn't
Earth images for mapping: NASA's Visible Earth, Blue Marble. http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/

Shading based on 3D Buzz's tutorial on the Maya Fundamentals CDs. However, I have added tweaks and other elements that I felt were missing.

Rendered with Mentalray, full production settings with fine trace. 1200 frames (40 seconds of vid. at 30 fps). Approximate render time; 120 hrs. on Intel Corei7 930, 2.80 Ghz. 12 Gigs RAM. Single GeForce GTX460 1024 MB DDR5 memory.

This is part of another project but I wanted to render out a full rotation. Note that the earth is on it's 23.45 degree tilt. Something I noticed that was missing from many other similar animation.

  • cool video but earth doesn't rotate at that angle :P and is moving a little fast :)

  • @AstroAnimation Actually it does rotate at this angle (see description). This would be Summer. Yes it's fast. If I did actual time it would not be noticeable since it would take 24 hours for a full rotation.

  • Can i use it for a beginning credits ?

  • @Meryose Credits for what?

  • @AstroAnimation no it may take 30 minutes to 3 hours to make a planet but rendering can take all day.

  • How did you make an atmosphere?
