Any chance you know when blacks started calliung themselves African-American? I'm thinking maybe during the rise of Malcolm X?? I have always wondered? I think it is so stupid, since I am Swiss (50%) and even have been to the chalet where my Great Grandfather was born in Switzerland and it is still my relatives who live in it. I'm German and Irish too! Should we all have a hyphen when we describe our ancestors heritage? NO!! I am no Swiss-American, just a red blooded proud American!!

This politically correct bullcrap is ridiculous. I absolutely refuse to call black American citizens "African-American." I'm white, but don't call me a European-American! Many "African-Americans" are of mixed race, making the term even more ridiculous. All the citizens of the U.S.A. are Americans, regardless of race. I think I see where you're coming from. I think the rationale for why 'African' is used might be because to them, "African" means an ethnicity as much as nationality. Kinda like how the word "Chinese" can mean both a race and a nationality, but not all ethnic Chinese are Chinese nationals. I would be as angry as you if someone were to refer to me as Chinese in the national sense, but I would agree that I'm ethnically Chinese. I came from Hong Kong.

as a first generation american, without much real understanding of the whole race "thing" here, i've always sort of wondered about the whole "african american".. thing. it really is kind of silly, isn't it? as a term it seems more divisive than constructive... "african american" versus, simply, "american"... yet it seems to be pretty well accepted in the mainstream. very odd.

Agreed. If your a citizen of America then your an AMERICAN or the title for whatever country you live in. Now days everybody is of mixed genes and culture so it's impossible to know for sure exactly how much of a race someone is but who cares everyone here is human.

The term "Nigger" originates from the Romans, The word Nigrum means Black in Latin and through many variations through Time Changed the word to Nigger, Likewise for Negro was a Portuguese word for Black, I wouldn't mind being called Albion because I'm White, Why should I, I'm perfectly content and proud of who I am, Why can't others be proud also?

Now then, African American, that's like Chinese Englishman, It doesn't sound right because it isn't, Genuine Americans are the Native Indian People.
