In the aftermath of WW2's 358, 000 and the Korean War's 50,000+ dead, U.S. Army Chief of Research & Development, General James M. Gavin DECIDED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Instead of having our troops continue to foot-slog over potentially nuclear irradiated battlefields, he ordered the creation of the Airborne Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle Family (AAM-PVF); the T113 prototype which became the legendary M113 tracked armored personnel carrier; the world's first fully-enclosed, amphibious and air transportable infantry-carry tank, a revolutionary design that is in combat today and for the future.

The Cuban Missile Crisis...the Berlin show-down...the Fulda Gap... Germany...Vietnam...Ap Bac...saving the surrounded Aussies in the nick of time at Long Tan, stopping the VC/NVA at Tan Son Nhut Air Base...busting up the Tet Offensive...retaking Saigon...driving deep into Cambodia...Laos...Africa...destroying MIGs and rescuing hostages at Entebbe...plowing through a school to rescue children for the Dutch Royal Marines...the Middle East...taking down Noriega in Panama...making peace in the Balkans...freeing Kuwait...defending Saudi Arabia...leading the way into Baghdad...holding us together in Iraq...making it safe in Afghanistan---the M113 Gavin kicks ass wherever its sent and the smart armies of the world put their money and their national security on their M113s. The full potential of the M113 Gavin has yet to be exploited to create Air-Mech-Strike light mechanized 3D maneuver infantry: when the U.S. decides to stop playing with "terra-ists" and put an end to the taking other's oil racket, the Gavins will be ready to put an end to the look-at-me-I-killed-some-civilians racket, too.

There's NOTHING wheels can do that tracks cannot do better and there's a whole hell of a lot things tracks can do that wheels CAN'T DO AT ALL.

  • I have 2 questions

1 How many M113s can fit in the C-5 galaxy?

2 whats the name of the upgrade seen at 6:50 that makes it look like the aav?

  • The C-5M can carry 6 x M113 Gavins 2 across volume-wise for a total of 12 but even stripped down at 20K each that's too much weight. The C-5M has a 176,610 lbs. payload so 6-8 x Gavins per C-5 is realistic.

  • Its Rafael passive armor with the shingle-like appearance.

  • how many 113's can fit in a basic C-130? by weight I'm thinking one that's combat ready?

  • 1 x M113 Gavin either rigged for airdrop or airland in a C-130E/H/J. Add to this all the men and combat equipment/supplies you need. the Gavin is a "C-130 stuffer" because its only 10.5 tons empty and gives lots of payload to work with.

  • Why aren't present day US Military leaders embracing the M113 and its many configurations other than selling out to the MICC?

  • Many are. M113A3 Gavins are being reset. We still have many weak egomaniac light infantry narcissists that hate the mech pussies in heavy units so much they'd rather be blown up on roads/trails in wheeled trucks than be seen in tracks.

  • A lot of good pictures, However it sure could use some narration. Those of us that were M113 "track drivers" know what we are seeing. Most people don't even know the difference from an APC and a tank. It is still good seeing how this vehicle has evolved and endured.

  • i like this tank than any other tanks out there .. i don't know but it's cool!

  • Hate to be in a situation where the weapon at 2:01 would be used.

  • @Panzerfaust111 The one in the water, or the one at time @06:55 ?

The one at time 06:55 is an m113 G3, with RPG sheild. the 2 big boxes on the left, and the right bag, is the fueltank.. We still use them in the danish army.. Nice car. Love it.

  • I spent a year with the 11acr Blackhorse in the M113. Amazing vehicle today I'm alive because my ACAV absorbed an Chi-com anti-tank mine. We were all wounded, my back fractured in 6 places but the Track held the exposion even with a cracked hull and huge hole in her side. We hit a lot of mines during my tour with the Scouts. I really like the diesel replacement engine in 1967 it meant the end of the huge fireballs and burnt flesh. GREAT WAR MACHINE, History channel voted it the best of the best.

  • The M113A1 replaced the Continental (M113) petrol engine with the GM6V53 diesel truck motor. This after it was examined and trialled in Australia by a young RAAC officer, retired and now deceased LtCol Karl Lewington, in 1962(?). Nice man, superb Cavalryman.

  • the concept is used extensively by the israelis, they armored up the M113 and converted trophy T-55s into Ahzarit heavy APCs. they care about their soldiers. adn whats funny is in IDF there is no parade march trainings - they think its a bunch of bull.
