Don't Kill the Birthday Girl - New Memoir from Sandra Beasley - Available as a hardcover and eBook - July 2011

Sandra Beasley has had severe allergies to certain foods her entire life. When butter is deadly and eggs can make your throat swell shut, cupcakes and other joys of childhood are out of the question—and so Sandra's mother used to warn guests against a toxic, frosting-tinged kiss with "Don't kill the birthday girl!"

From her short-lived gig as a restaurant reviewer, to the dates that ended with trips to the emergency room—Sandra Beasley, an award-winning poet and former American Scholar editor— shares her captivating memoir about growing up and coming to terms with a potentially deadly disorder.

  • My kids both have severe food allergies to multiple foods. I am very excited to read your book and see your point of view - I am doing my best to provide as many food options for my kids and I know in the past 10 years that allergen free foods have really exploded - yay! I am grateful for you book and that it raises awareness. Thank you!

  • Thank you for sharing. I have a 6 year old son who is going through what you went through. I good to know he is not the only one out there.

  • When I was four years old I had such serious allergies that I was diagnosed with a terminal illness. When I was admitted to an isolation ward at the hospital, my parents told me that I was going to be blasted into outer space. It did not take me long to figure out that I was going to die. Apparently I did not, but I will never forget that experience, or others in my childhood related to serious allergies. I very much look forward to this book.

  • Watching this video made feel better about my allergies....Though I'm not sure whether I have allergies or whether my body reacts in an unusual way to certain foods, circumstances and forms of pollution....maybe there's also a psychological/spiritual factor.....and maybe this can be solved by psycho-therapy. I also believe living more in harmony with essential aspects of yourself and with real nature, helps your body becoming stronger.
